Skiing is at the pinnacle of our family bonding time and we are so appreciative of this shared love that has so much positive impact on our lives. We’re here to share our story, our learnings, our failures, our vision, in hopes that your family will also grow your love of the Winter, the outdoors, of skiing, and of family rituals.
Our story begins when Matthew and Yuliya first met in 2007. Matthew, originally from New Hampshire, grew up skiing as a kid, but it wasn’t until College that the roots began to really form. Yuliya did not grow up skiing, but quickly (and sometimes painfully) learned how, and to love it. When we welcomed our first daughter, Victoria, to the world in 2015, it was not long before our thoughts turned from “how are we going to teach her to ski?” to buying her first (very small) pair when she had just turned 2. Fast forward 2 years, in 2019, when we first got to say hello to our second daughter, Charlotte, and Victoria (now 4), was entering her first formal ski lessons, well-prepared.
4 years later we look back with pride at what our girls have become, both on and off the snow. This time skiing together, being close, molding our lives around skiing and winter, and growing as family is so cherished. We knew it was time to write about who we are, what we’ve learned, and help others.
Crawl, Walk, Ski was born in 2023 to help you in your quest to raise confident, skilled, thoughtful kids who will be your ski buddies for life.
Matthew
Hi, I’m Matthew. My love for skiing began where I grew up, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, when I was three. Although skiing wasn’t always my top priority, it’s been a presence in my life from this very young age. It was the inspiration for my first job at Sunday River, where I would wake up well before the sun and drive down a very dark Route 2, every winter weekend, for 4 straight seasons during High School.
When I moved away from New Hampshire at 18 for warmer climates, my fondest memories still revolved around snow. These shimmering crystals of frozen water became an integral part of who I am today. It was this deep-seated affection for snow, combined with the allure of affordable ski passes for college students, that reignited my passion for skiing in my early 20s. This newfound dedication to the sport marked a significant turn in my skiing journey and I spent my life with Yuliya slowly but surely crafting our skiing family. Currently, I work in robotics, driven by a deep passion for creating innovative products that assist people, especially in public safety & the defense industry. I find joy in blending this enthusiasm with my commitment to serving our country and supporting snow sports enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers whenever possible. I am excited to translate my experience architecting advanced technical systems into architecting a framework for teaching young kids how to ski.
Yuliya
My skiing journey started falling and sliding down a very icy slope at Cannon Mountain, ending that day promptly before 10am, while still a teenager. I grew up in Eastern Ukraine, in typically harsh winter conditions, but without skiing; winter back then was always about survival, not about fun. I moved to the US when I was 16 to go to school and start my new life here.
By my late 20’s I was chasing steep black pistes in the French Alps with Matthew, and then starting our family. I love sharing this joy of skiing, all aspects of it, with my children and it serves as an inspiration to include them in everything we do, regardless of the weather or difficulties involved. I believe that raising risk takers, creative thinkers, and ambitious go-getters is an integral part of parenting; skiing provides this.
Today, I hold a Master’s of Education degree in Early Childhood Education and own and manage a child care and learning academy for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. I am excited to share my child care experience with you all in helping your little ones become confident and passionate skiers.
Victoria
I am 8 years old. I love my friends and family; it makes me feel happy when I’m skiing with my sister. My goal is to compete in the Olympics for alpine skiing. I also love to draw, act, dance, and learn other creative arts. Another thing I like to do is tell stories and play pretend with my sister and friends. When I grow up, I want to be a pediatrician. I am excited to tell you about my skiing life.
Charlotte
Hi, my name is Charlotte and I am four years old and I love skiing. Sometimes I like going to school. I also like watching movies but sometimes I get scared of Harry Potter. Once, there was a scary Harry Potter movie but it was short and I put a blanket over my head. By the way, I love my friends and family but the most I love is my family. My favorite activities are to go outside, climb in the rock house, and build fairy houses out of fun nature. I also love collecting nature, especially bugs, but sometimes I feel a little lazy so I just lie in my bed and stay home. The thing that makes me tick is my heart. When I grow up I want to be a veterinarian.
Isaac
This is Isaac. He’s very new to the world and is one of the biggest inspirations for starting Crawl, Walk, Ski. He has no idea how many future mountain adventures he’s in for.
